Do French Bulldogs Shed? What They Don't Tell You.

The short answer is yes — French Bulldogs do shed. But it's more nuanced than most people expect, and the breed's reputation as a low-shedder can be misleading.
The Frenchie Coat
French Bulldogs have a single, short, smooth coat without the dense undercoat you'd find in many other breeds. While this means less volume of shed hair, the individual hairs themselves are stiff and short — they have a remarkable tendency to weave themselves into fabrics like a needle. You'll find them embedded in upholstery, clothing, and blankets in ways that longer dog hair never achieves.
Seasonal Shedding
Shedding increases seasonally — particularly in spring when Frenchies lose their slightly thicker winter coat, and again in fall as coats transition. During these periods, daily brushing with a rubber curry brush or grooming mitt is especially helpful.
Fluffy French Bulldogs & Shedding
Fluffy French Bulldogs carry the long-hair gene (L1/L4). Interestingly, some dedicated breeders selectively breed Fluffy Frenchies with lower-shedding lines through genetic testing. While no French Bulldog is truly hypoallergenic, Fluffy Frenchies can have a different texture that some allergy sufferers find more manageable. This is still an emerging area of study in the breed.
How to Manage Frenchie Shedding
- •Feed a premium protein-rich food — coat quality starts from within
- •Supplement with NuVet Plus vitamins for coat health and reduced shedding (code 648631)
- •Brush weekly with a rubber grooming mitt or soft bristle brush
- •Bathe every 3–4 weeks to remove loose hair
- •Add omega fatty acids (fish oil) to their diet for a healthier coat

"A little shedding is a small price to pay for the most loving, entertaining, loyal companion you'll ever have."
